And because they’re baked, not fried,
that’s OK!
I made chocolate donut holes the other day for the chocolate lovers here and then I thought about...
Way back in the days when I’d stay overnight at my grandparents’ and Grandma would pull out the jar of her homemade cinnamon sugar to sprinkle on my warm buttered toast for breakfast. Ummmm, mmm! A great sweet treat!
So after making the chocolate version, I started the process of making cinnamon sugar donut holes.
The sweet cinnamon sugar coating is finger-licking good and goes perfectly with a cup of coffee, tea or milk. The recipe makes a couple of dozen; the little morsels are easy to make and bake, no greasy mess from frying.
In addition to cinnamon, the recipe includes ground nutmeg and ground cardamom. If you don’t want to use them, go with a heaping teaspoon ground cinnamon.
As for the chocolate ones, they’re just as easy to make and delicious with their deep-dark chocolate flavor, a perfect way to start the day or for a treat any time!

Another by the way, if you don’t have a donut hole pan, a mini-muffin pan works well also.
Now there’s no need to run to the donut shop anymore...
Just bake a batch of donut holes yourself!
Baked Chocolate Cake Donut Holes
Ingredients
- 1½ cups flour
- ¾ cup Dutch process coco powder
- 2 teaspoons Espresso powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup butter, melted
- 1½ cups brown sugar, packed
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- ½ cup milk
- FOR THE COATING:
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon Dutch process cocoa powder
Method
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Coat donut hole pan with baking spray.
- Whisk, flour, cocoa, espresso powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl.
- Place butter, sugar and vanilla in a large bowl, whisk to combine,
- Add egg and milk, continue whisking until smooth.
- Add flour mixture to butter mixture, stir gently to combine.
- Using a small spoon, fill pan wells 3/4 full.
- Bake for about 8 to 10 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with a moist crumb or two.
- FOR THE COATING:
- Combine sugar and cocoa in a small paper bag and fold over the top before shaking or combine sugar and cocoa in a bowl.
- Immediately gently shake the donut holes in the coating a couple of times to coat thoroughly, or roll in sugar in bowl to coat.
- Enjoy warm or room temperature.
Baked Cinnamon Donut Holes
Ingredients
- ¼ cup butter, softened
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- ½ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1½ cups flour
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, optional
- ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom, optional
- FOR CINNAMON SUGAR COATING:
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
Method
- Preheat oven to 375°.
- Coat donut hole pan with baking spray.
- In a large bowl, using mixer, cream together butter and sugars until fluffy.
- Beat in egg, milk and vanilla until combined, while scraping sides of bowl when needed.
- Add flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom, mix on low speed just until combined.
- Using a teaspoon, divide dough among 24 wells, filling them about 3/4 full.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.
- Remove from pan, and dust with cinnamon sugar.
- FOR CINNAMON SUGAR COATING:
- Combine sugar and cinnamon in a small paper bag and fold over the top before shaking or combine sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.
- Immediately gently shake the donut holes in the coating a couple of times to coat thoroughly, or roll in sugar in bowl to coat.
- Serve warm or at room temperature
