Martha Hall Foose’s Bacon Crackers for Super Bowl LV

Super Bowl LV!

Mahomes vs Brady

We're breaking from tradition here this year.  Not attending the usual Super Bowl party, no Zoom partying either, no virtual celebrations; we will be eating and drinking here at home ~ a Family Super Bowl Day ~ thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

Bill has had the vaccine, the rest of us are waiting...

Home is good place to be then though as there's a foot of snow on the ground, and more on the way, with a predicted high temperature for Sunday of a whopping 0° to 3°.

I've watched every Super Bowl game from the get-go way back on January 15, 1967, when the Green Bay Packers won over the Kansas City Chiefs, 35 to 10,
in the first-ever AFL-NFL World Championship, later known as Super Bowl I, at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles.

Bill's a devoted Packer enthusiast.  He was in Germany for the first Super Bowl and missed watching the Pack, but has viewed them all since.

On one hand, I'd like to see KC win again this year, on the other, it'd be great to see Brady add to his SB ring collection, it's a toss-up!

This Super Bowl LV marks a first!   The first time ever for a team to play on its on its home field.

Now for a great snack from...

Garden and Gun magazine!

I’ve been a subscriber from the first issue I purchased at Barnes and Noble Bookstore some years ago.

The magazine focuses on the American South, attracting men and women both.  Its pages feature great dog stories of love, loyalty, and loss.  Relating also traditions of today in the South, its travel, music, art and sporting culture:  hunting, fly fishing, fox hunting, boating, golf…

It’s about its people and their ideas ~ interesting articles from local chefs, casual and fine dining, tempting intoxicating cocktails and a plethora of recipes from fried chicken to pimento cheese, just like the following recipe for Bacon Crackers by Martha Hall Foose.

These crispy bacon crackers are an easy to make appetizer to serve with drinks during gatherings; holiday entertaining, game day snacks, or an anytime treat for you and your family.

Oven-ready

Chef Martha Hall Foose calls these gems "a naughty little road.”  She says women the age of her grandmother, like the bridge club crowd, always made bacon crackers.  Foose doesn’t claim this as her invention, because she’d get a flood of hate mail from ladies who told her they were baking this appetizer long before she was even born.

Versions of this recipe abound on the web.  Instead of savory, sweeten them up with a teaspoon of brown sugar on top of the bacon.  Want another version?  Sprinkle Parmesan or Blue cheese over the top of the cracker, wrap with the bacon, top it with more cheese.  Season with pepper, and dip in ranch.  Substitute your favorite cracker, Townhouse, Ritz, or any buttery cracker.

Want a bonus?  You can prepare them ahead and freeze.  Let thaw for an hour or two and serve at room temperature or bake in a 300° oven for about 10 minutes until warmed through.

Your Super Bowl gang will have you begging for more!

They just might be the most addictive snack you’ve ever had...

Not to mention how good the kitchen smells!

Just wish I could say

"Go Bears" Sunday!

  7. Pam, As you know, everything is better with bacon! We'd love these little game time treats but we've never had them. Maybe for the game though... We're torn re: the game's winner. Love Patrick with the Chiefs but it would be cool if Brady could win the Super Bowl at his 'advanced age.' I had been rooting for the Packers but such is life... 10. It will be a sad day Sunday without the Packers or Bears to cheer on, but at least we'll be more relaxed during the game :) I had never heard of bacon crackers before but want to try them soon! We haven't had bacon since our last BLTs of the early fall so I think we're entitled! Glad to hear Bill is a Packer fan and that he got his first shot. My hubby and I got our first shots last Friday...pure luck that a friend shared a link to a little tiny pharmacy that got some vaccine.

  14. Our Bills have the love of the Packers in common!! And he loves bacon, too. My sister made these once when she was visiting and I'd forgotten about them. Will need an excuse to whip up a batch ASAP!

The trouble is, you cannot grow just one zucchini. Minutes after you plant a single seed, hundreds of zucchini will barge out of the ground and sprawl around the garden, menacing the other vegetables. At night, you will be able to hear the ground quake as more and more zucchinis erupt.
