This is a really close cousin to Dutch apple pie, actually maybe more like a crisp, and there’s no crust to roll out! French apple dessert has a buttery crust, and is packed with apples, cinnamon and nutmeg.
It’s covered with a hard-to-resist crumbly streusel topping of brown sugar and pecans, that is crisp and delicious and sweet.
My "go-to" apple for desserts is Honeycrisp, use your favorite apple for baking this dessert. I make it with Splenda instead of granulated sugar, you would never know the difference!
I used a 9 x 13-inch Pyrex baking dish, making it much easier to cut into squares instead of making in a pie plate and cutting into wedges. For smaller squares, cut into 15 servings, it’s on the rich side.
You are going to love a helping of this with whipped cream or ice cream, or just on its own!
We've had lots of celebrating here lately: our 51st anniversary, my birthday and now Mother's Day shortly...
This is a perfect treat for Mom and everyone on Mother's Day!
FRENCH APPLE DESSERT SQUARES
Printable recipe
INGREDIENTS:
STREUSEL:
1 cup original Bisquick mix
½ cup packed brown sugar, or Splenda
¼ cup butter or margarine
¾ cup chopped pecans
FRUIT MIXTURE:
6 cups apples (6 medium), sliced and peeled tart (I used Honeycrips)
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup original Bisquick mix
1 cup granulated sugar, or Splenda
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter, melted
4 eggs, beaten
METHOD:
- 1. Heat oven to 325°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch pan or a 9-inch glass pie plate with cooking spray.
- 2. In small bowl, mix 1/2 cup Bisquick mix, the brown sugar and nuts.
- 3. Cut in 2 tablespoons butter, using pastry blender (or pulling 2 table knives through ingredients in opposite directions), until crumbly; set aside.
- 4. In medium bowl, mix apples, cinnamon and nutmeg. Spread in pie plate.
- 5. In medium bowl, stir remaining ingredients until blended. Pour into pie plate. Sprinkle with streusel.
- 6. Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean and top is golden brown. Cool 5 minutes.
- 7. Serve warm, room temperature, or chilled.
Store covered in refrigerator.

Delete"impossibly easy" - I like this two words compound.
ReplyDeleteYour apples and cinnamon dessert is ideal for celebrating happy anniversaries (Congratulations!!). Top it with some ice-cream, and you get a really decadent treat.
We use Splenda in Israel too, and its a good sugar substitute.
Thanks, Duta! I like those 2 words together also. I use Splenda a lot, saves a lot of calories so then I can eat ice cream on this. ☺
