Spicy Garlic-Lime Shrimp with Grits

Remember what Bubba Gump said?

"Shrimp is the fruit of the sea.
You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it,
bake it, sauté it.
There's uh, shrimp-kabobs,
shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo.
Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried."

And then there's this dish that has all the right ingredients: ~ Spicy Garlic-Lime Shrimp!

This shrimp dish is great for a quick easy meal ~ it's unique and quite tasty! It has a tangy kick to it, thanks to garlic and red pepper flakes. Lime juice and sugar rounds it out for added flavor.

It's some of the most delicious shrimp you will ever make.  Now I'm wondering why I don't make a shrimp dinner more often since it makes a truly great meal...

Printable recipe

Ingredients:
1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
¼ cup butter
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
½ teaspoon salt
¼ to ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes

2 teaspoons chili powder
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
Green onions, sliced and lime slices, for garnish
Stone-ground grits

Method:
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
Mix in garlic, sugar, salt, red pepper flakes, and chili powder, sauté for 30 seconds.
Add shrimp and sauté until shrimp turns pink about 4-5 minutes.
Stir in lime juice.
Serve over grits and garnish with lime slices and onion.

For grits:
4 cups water

1 cup stone-ground grits
Salt and butter, to taste
1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Bring water to a rapid boil in a heavy saucepan.
Add butter, salt, garlic powder and grits and stir until water boils again.

Lower heat to a simmer, cover and continue cooking for 20 minutes stirring often and adding water if necessary.

Enjoy!

  1. Your shrimp look delicious. I found some frozen wild-caught Florida shrimp at Whole Foods recently, so I need a recipe. Maybe this is it! I have never eaten grits and don't have them on hand, but might use another starch.

I worry about Asian shrimp that are raised on farms that destroy the environment and use slave labor. Plus the shrimp from these farms aren't especially safe with regard to pesticides/insecticides/cleanliness.

  4. I have been trying to think of a dish to serve this week that is not in our normal wheelhouse. I am not a huge shrimp fan but I am going to make this using scallops instead. Thank you for the inspiration!

    1. Hi Anne! This would be great with scallops and I will be trying it. Scallops are delicious but I've never cooked them, that will have to change. Thanks for your inspiration!

  5. Shrimp are on the top of my list when it comes to seafood. I think I could eat them every day and never tire of em. This recipe looks simple enough, with the exception of cooking grits. I just do not have much luck cooking them.

  12. I'm usually sort of "ho-hum" when it comes to shrimp and grits, but this sounds so tasty. It's feels Asian, but still has that Southern US sound to it. Can't wait to give it a try...
